Hello, my name is Melinda Clark-Black. I have ancestors on my mothers-mothers side from your Hunterdon County, NJ. His name was John Hill and he had a son named:
Samuel Hill, Sr. born on July 27, 1772 & died February 17, 1853
Samuel Hill, Sr. m. Rachel _______ (unknown). All dates are unknown. Samuel came from Brownsville, PA. Bought land from Jacob Prickit on Dec. 5th, 1816 near Prickett's Fort, Marion County, VA.
Children of Samuel Hill & Rachel:
1. Issac Hill born about 1800.
But I have not been able to verify about John Hill or about the birth of his son Samuel Hill. If you have any ideas please help guide me here. Thanks

RESPONSE:
I can only help you from the information I am getting from my project of Indexing the Hunterdon Gazette, the first newspaper published at Flemington, New Jersey. It started March 24, 1825 and was purchased by the Hunterdon Democrat in July 1866. I have now completed the years 1825 thru 1836. The surname HILL appears frequently in these issues. Following is a list of those persons with bits and pieces of information listed in this newspaper.
Aaron C., Adonijonah, Miss Ann B., Asher, Benjamin S., David, Rev. D. T., Eliza C. Elizabeth, Miss Elizabeth, Howell, Isaac, James A., Jasper S., Joachim [Joakim], John, John B., Joseph, Josephus, Lemuel, Miss Martha Maria, Mary, Richard, Samuel, Samuel C., Sarah, Stout, Thomas, William.
There were probably at least 3 persons named Samuel Hill since in the first issue dated Mar. 24, 1825 noted that Real Estate belonging to a Samuel Hill, deceased, was to be sold by his executors, Asher Hill and Thomas Capner. There were 4 lots of land all within about 2 miles of Flemington.
On, July 14, 1825, the second Samuel Hill, aged 27 years, died in the township of Trenton. His Father was Richard Hill.
The most prominent Samuel Hill and one still alive and kicking in 1836 was a politician, a judge, and manufactured bricks and pottery - unless there were 3 more Sam's!
Moving on to John HILL. Again there were at least 2 John's. On December 29, 1825, John Hill, son of Samuel Hill of Flemington died at the age of 5 years 6 months. On March 26, 1838, John Hill, one of the devisees of Samuel Hill, late of the county of Hunterdon, claimed the one equal and undivided third part of land that apparently belonged to Sam. This is probably the Sam who was noted in the March 24 issue. In September 1829, both Samuel Hill and John Hill were nominated to the Assembly of New Jersey, neither were elected. Apparently a John Hill owned land about a mile from Flemington since he was noted to own land next to property of William Maxwell, deceased, that was being sold. The ad was dated Nov. 11, 1829.
I really can't do much more for you at this time. There are tons of info on the HILLs and I have done more than I should since I continue to receive many requests for information on your favorite surnames.
I will continue the project and try to get the index on the Internet sometime soon. When it is available for viewing, I will notify the NJHUNTER list.
The hard copy of the newspaper is at the Hunterdon County Historical Society in Flemington and I encourage all to use their facilities since they have much more than a few years of the Gazette. When the Index goes online, I will ask if you have an interest in a CD for every ten years of the Gazette. This will include the Overall Index, the yearly index with the page references, the typed text which simulates the original newspaper items, and the digital photos of the original newspaper.
Regards to all those interested in "What the Sam HILL!"
Bill
