As a possibility ...
There is a Neeltje CLAESSEN-SMIT (1653 - c 1699) who married a John LAKE
in Gravesend, Long Island. Neeltje was the daughter of Claes
CLAESSEN-SMIT & Geertruyd WILLEKINS who were married in 1653 in New
Amsterdam. Neeltje is noted as being of Gravesend. The family's surname
could have changed to CLAESSEN/CLAESEN. Many Long Island families seemed
to have relocated to Hunterdon Co in the 18th century.

Also, I have a Susan D LAKE, daughter of John LAKE and Ann DILTS, born
1815 Hunterdon Co, married John CLAWSON of Pa who died before 1898.
