From the "History of Hunterdon County..." by J. P. Snell (1880), the
following describes Alexandria Township:
"Alexandria Township was set off from Bethlehem by the board of
justices and freeholders of Hunterdon County, March 5, 1765. It was
named after James Alexander, who, November 1, 1744, became possessed
of 10,000 acres of land, lying mostly in this township, of the West
Jersey Land Society's great tract. Before Holland was set off, this
township contained 31,095 acres; since then, 16,444 acres. The
valuation of taxable property is rated as $925,770; population 1,324."
It is difficult to trace family histories in Alexandria and Holland
Township, as most of the early settlers were "tenant farmers" along
large tracts of land. Their rents were relatively low, and the
tenants agreed to make specified improvements, plant and cultivate
fruit trees, etc.
In his book, Snell lists tenants of the Barker Tract, the Hamilton
Tract and the Society's Tract. They are listed from approximately
1765 to 1792. If you let me know who you're looking for, I'll do a
lookup.
Hope this helps.
