Bob,

I have, I think, different information than what Jane Van M BELLIS SOUSA
apparently put in her DAR application papers:

The Adam BELLIS who was married to Katrina DILTS was born May 5, 1747 in
Hillsborough Twp, Somerset Co. and died Dec 18, 1841, near Shannock (age
94). Katrina was the d/o Peter DILTS. Adam was the son of Johan Wilhelm
BELLESFELDT (William BELLIS) and Anna Catharina KEMPEL. William BELLIS died
in Somerset Co. NJ sometime after 1771. Adam had a brother, Wilhelm, who
also served in the Revolution. Apparently the two would swap duty every
other month. Family genealogists have surmised that William "probably died"
of wounds suffered in the Battle of Monmouth. I'm not so sure. He may have
gone west with his cousins to Ohio (Jane Sousa's father, Henry BELLIS, was
born in Cincinnati, OH) and ended up in Paris, Bourbon Co.,KY (there's an
unidentified William Bellis in Bourbon Co., KY.) Jane's grandmother, Jane
Van Middlesworth, died in Cincinnati in 1827. It was after her death that
her husband Peter BELLIS (b. c. 1790, d. Jan 2, 1842 near Shannock,
Hillsborough Twp., Somerset Co. NJ) and sons Henry and Richard returned to
NJ. Peter remarried Ida Stryker, d/o Peter Stryker.

Don't know if this Adam BELLIS is the same person Jane Sousa was referring
to in her papers as I don't have any Adam BELLIS born in 1752 or dying in
Montgomery Co., NJ. I do have fleeting information on an Adam BELLIS
marrying Catherine D. Vandeventer Aug 4, 1832 but that's ALL I have on him.

To confuse the situation a little further: I have information from another
researcher that an Adam BELLIS married Anna SUTPHIN July 18, 1778. It is
not known who Adam's parents were. It is known that Anna was the widow of
John Sutphin, who died June 6, 1777 from Rev War wounds. Adam & Anna had
these children:

Jacob BELLIS (m. Ann Dilts, Readington)
William BELLIS (m. Betsey Brewer)
Ann BELLIS (m. James Jewel & Mr. Young of NY)

Re. Christeen Bellis who married Adam Dils/Dilts. I can't place a Christeen
d/o Peter s/o William. There is a possibility she belongs to the BELLIS up
in Sussex (now Warren Co.) who had land along the Delaware River and the
Paulinskil River but I'd need a little more info, such as her rough age.
Also, what is your source on her father Peter being the son of William?
Knowing that would help me sort out a few things.

Roz
