Marilyn,
As regards Adam BELLIS's father -- William Bellesfelt, there were two
"Williams" who lived in NJ at the same time and seem to have been confused
by genealogists over the years. The following comes from page 203 of
"BELLIS Ancestors & Cousins", by Tom and Genevieve Bellis:
---------------
"Johan Wilhelm Bollesfeldt (William Bellis) (b. 1713)
Johan Wilhelm Bollesfeldt, younger brother of our immigrant Adam I
(1706-1761), was christened in Nordhofen, near Neuwied, Germany, in October,
1713. He came to Hunterdon Co. NJ around 1740 and was naturalized Dec 8,
1744, along with his brothers Adam and Peter. Wilhelm was married May 29,
1743, at the Reformed Dutch Collegiate Church in NY, to Anna Catharina
Kempel. Both were described as from Neuwied. Wilhelm was living in Amwell;
Anna Catharina was living in NY. (Chambers: "Early Germans of NJ", page
262)
Wilhelm Bollesfeldt was active in the church at Larrison's Corner, and on
January 21, 1749, the deed to the graveyard there was made to William Kase,
Peter Hoffman, and William "Bellowsfelt," Trustees of the High Dutch
Congregation in Amwell Township. (Rockefeller Genealogy, III:38).
The will of Adam Bellis I, signed March 7, 1761, named "Han William Bellows,
my brother, and Catherine Bellows, my loving wife," to be executor and
executrix of his will. The will provided that Adam's land was to be sold
ten years from the date of his will. On march 7, 1771, Han William "Belles"
and Anna Catharine "Belles," executors of the will of Adam "Belles" sold the
property to William "Belles" Jr., son of Adam I. (Hunterdon County Deeds,
5:292).
The name of Johan Wilhelm Bollesfeldt was anglicized to William Bellis
around 1760, and his known descendants spell the name "Bellis."
According to Theodore Bellis, William Bellis bought a place on the east side
of Neshanic Creek in Hunterdon County. William later sold this property and
moved to what is now Somerset Co. He bought 250 acres of land there and
built a log house in which the family lived for several years. In 1758 he
built a stone house which was still standing in 1894, having been occupied
until shortly before that time. We did not find in the index to Somerset Co
records a will or other probate papers for William Bellis. Theodore Bellis
gives the names of William's children as Adam, Wilhelm, Marie, and Ure.
A second Wilhelm Bollesfeldt made a will in Amwell Township, Hunterdon
County, on June 14, 1773. His will named his wife Catharine, an eldest
daughter with children by two marriages, a daughter Elizabeth, and sons
George, John, Bernardus (Barnet), William, Philip, and Adam. We believe
that these two Wilhelms were cousins. Chambers in "Early Germans of NJ"
confused these two men and the reason for his mix-up is pretty obvious.
Each man had a wife named Catharine and each had sons named Adam and
William.
Adam Bellis (1747-1841), son of William Bellis and Catharina Kempel, lived
all of his long life in Somerset County. The "Somerset Whig" in its January
11, 1842 issue reported in its death notices, "Near Shannock, on the 18th
Dec., Adam Bellis, in the 94th years of his age, a hero of the Revolution."
