Hi Gary, You wrote:
Can someone tell me where the best places are to start looking for official
birth records of father and son who were born in Hunterdon co. in 1751 and
1796?
Answer:
From my limited knowledge of local history, the only place that births were
recorded, if they were recorded at all, would be the local church. Most of
these early records are lost. Wish you luck since you will have to know
where the father and son were located during those years and what church
they attended. If you get a definite hit on this, you will have to determine
if the church records are extant. Family Bibles are also a source of these
early birth dates.
I am not sure, and I hope someone else can help give you a date for when
'Date of Birth' was officially required by the State. I believe it was well
after the 1840s.
Can't help you with the Census records!
Regards, Bill
