Subject: [NJHUNTER] POORHOUSE news shared by a Neighbor!
Date: Wed, 13 Nov 2002 17:41:48 -0600

Sometimes "Serendipity" brings us a real blessing!
This one came from a neighbor of yours who now lives in Flemington.

Eighty-four year old (but "not yet quite senior") Jeanne Summerton Spangler,
whose parents and grandparents were Superintendents & Matrons of the
Elizabeth Almshouse [in Union County]until 1960, recently wrote to us. She
and her siblings grew up in that poorhouse. She wrote us to provide some
historical notes about that poorhouse ... which we have just posted on the
NEW JERSEY page on our website. (We also hope she will be sharing more of
her memories with us in the future.)The POORHOUSE STORY is a clearinghouse
for information on 19th century American poorhouses. And this is just the
kind of information we love to share! [See directions at the bottom of this
message.]

We are also delighted to announce that NEW JERSEY Radio Station KGHT 1500
will be discussing Poorhouse history on the program. And you can meet Jeanne
(really, because the show takes call-ins)and hear her recollections.

"North Jersey's Talking"
host: Lee Fielding
CALL LETTERS: WGHT
FREQUENCY: 1500
Date: Thursday, November 14th 2002
Time: 8:00 AM (EST)

IMPORTANT NOTE: We suggest you tune in early ... the program signs on at
7:00 AM.

If you go to the homepage of The POORHOUSE STORY at
http://www.poorhousestory.com you can find Jeanne's notes by clicking on the
link to POORHOUSES BY STATE and then clicking on NEW JERSEY on the table of
states.

On that same homepage at http://www.poorhousestory.com you can also
click on the link to our NEWS ALERTS page
for more details about the radio program and how to listen to it
(live only! ... that means "real time")
on the internet if you do not get that station where you live.

The program airs from Pompton Lakes, Passaic County, New Jersey.
The program will also be covering the current controversy about
what to do with an old poorhouse cemetery in Hudson County!

Hope you enjoy the website!
And we hope you can join us on the radio!
