Subject: Fw: [NJHUNTER] New Jersey censuses?
Date: Mon, 9 Dec 2002 09:42:09 -0500
This discussion brings up a question I've been meaning to research.
I'd always thought the explanation for the loss of early censuses (NJ, VA
and ??? is it DE? what other states, does anyone know for sure?) was the
burning of Washington by the British in 1812. OK, that explains why no
1790, 1800 and 1810.
But then how did the 1820 census get destroyed? In a separate fire? Or, is
the British burning Washington just a more florid explanation for a later,
post-1820, fire. Does any historian out there know the explanation for
this?
Thanks, M
