Prior to 1830, censuses were archived with US District Courts. In 1830,
Congress passed a law requiring their transfer to the Library of Congress.
Lost during the War of 1812 were the statistical abstracts of the censuses
that were stored in Washington.

While some of the census records were lost by "courthouse fires" in various
districts, others just disappeared. Other than the Flemington Courthouse
fire of 1828, I'm not aware of any NJ Courthouse fires of this period.
