Dear Listers,
More on Kingwood Baptist Church (now Baptistown Baptist) in Hunterdon
Co. NJ.
In 1784 a Rev. Nicolas Cox and his wife Rebecca came to Baptistown
from a church in Great Valley, PA (near Valley Forge).
He turned out to be a very forceful and popular preacher, so much so
that in 1788 he baptized sixty-one converts including Daniel Bray.
Then in 1790 he rocked the three churches at Baptistown, Locktown and
Flemington by declaring that he had become a Universalist. As a result Rev.
Cox was forbidden to preach in all three of the churches and between 1790
and 1793 twenty -four members were excluded for holding the Universalist
view.
Now I quote directly from the book:

COVENANT MEETING---REVEREND COX TRIED

"On Aug. 7, 1790, the Kingwood church in Baptistown held a covenant
meeting to determine the stand of each member concerning Universalism. The
minutes record tha the following thirty-seven signed the covenant:
Lidia Bevers Rachel Hegaton
Rebecca Bonham Paul Hill
Daniel Bray Rachel Hill
James Bray David Hunt
Mary Bray Susannah Kugler
John Britton Savy Lake
Anna Burd Elizabeth Lequer
Henry Burd Thomas Lequer
William Chamberlain Mary Longley
Thomas Curtis Doritta Merrill
Marcy Davis Luther Opdyke
Samuel Davis Asa Reed
Francis Dennis Thomas Roberson
Mary Dilts Deborah Stout
James Drake Mary Stout
Hannah Emmons Anna West
Job Emmons Anna Warford
William Fulper Moses Warford
William Goddard

On May 2, 1791, the church tried Reverend Cox for his Universalist
views. Daniel Bray, whom Reverend Cox had taken into the church through
baptism, was chosen as moderator. Judges for the church were Thomas Curtis,
James Drake and Job Emmons. Found guilty of the charges, Reverend Cox was
excluded from all three churches. The churches were then without a minister
from 1790 to 1795."

If anyone is interested, I have discovered that there are five copies
of this little booklet still available. The charge per book is $5.00 plus
postage----the money will go to the estate of the author. I am not connected
to the author in any way nor will I make anything on the sale of the books.
I just called the place where I obtained my copy and asked if any were
available. If you are interested, you can email me privately. (The person
who has the books does not have email.) The first five people to respond
will be the ones who get the books.
