THE LAMBERTVILLE BEACON, April 20, 1933.
(Continued from last weeks issue)
There were some of the Phillips name in America at least as early as 1623, and by 1660 there were many here. Of these we mention Frederick Philipse, born about 1626 at Bolwaerts in Friesland, married Margaret Hardenbrook, widow of Peter Rudalphous De Vries, married as second wife Catherine, daughter of Cloff S. Van Cortlandt, in 1692. In 1693 hid estate was chartered as the Manor of Philipseborough, and the Manor House later became part of the City Hall of Yonkers, N.Y. For twenty-five years he was known as the wealthiest man in New York City. He was the great grandfather of Mary Philipse, of whom George Washington was said to have been enamored. This family built Castle Philipse and the church at Sleepy Hollow, N.Y. which church is said to be the oldest church building in New York State.
Thomas Phillips, an early settler in Pennsylvania, whose son John married Rebecca Fish, is not related to John Phillips of Pleasant Valley, as far as known.
John Phillips, son of Thomas, owned Phillips Mills, above New Hope, Pa., and was the ancestor of Amos and Edward Phillips, of Hopewell, N.J.; of Frank Phillips, of Lambertville; of Israel Phillips, who married Elizabeth Larue; of Aaron Phillips, of Scudder Phillips and of many others.
Not much is known of John Phillips, son of John, of Pleasant Valley, who inherited land "where he lives" but it is quite likely that he was closely related to those mentioned below as unidentified, and with whose descendants we should like to get in touch, and it is also likely that many of his descendants went to Pennsylvania, New York and Ohio soon after 1800.
Not properly identified is Peter Phillips, who married Mary Muirheid, in 1760, was born at Pleasant Valley, July 1, 1742, in the stone house on the farm, long known as the Azariah Hunt farm, about one-half mile from the Pleasant Valley school-house, and it is quite likely that this was once the farm of John Phillips, son of John Phillips, of Pleasant Valley. Peter Phillips and Mary Muirehir had
Titus, born in 1761, moved to Pennsylvania and died there.
Peter, born July 1, 1762, married Betty Hart, sister to Hannah Hart, who married Edmund Phillips. He went to Holland Tract, Seneca Co., New York, and later to Michigan, where he died in 1849.
Joseph, born May 1, 1786, married January 10, 1813, Mary Hise, daughter of Jacob and Mary Hise, and married second wife Charity Hise, sister to Mary. They went to Ovid, New York, and then to Michigan. A long list of his descendants has been compiled by A.E. Hise, of Ohio, and Mrs. H.H.Markley, of Florida. Mrs. Markley has furnished the names of all of the Peter Hise lines, of whom there are some 600.
Betsy Phillips married Edward Roberts and lived and died in New Jersey.
Rebecca Phillips married John Roberts, and removed to Michigan.
Sarah Phillips married a McKinster, and lived and died in New Jersey.
Job Phillips, born 1735, had a brother Micajah, a brother Theophilus, born 1740, a sister Hannah who married John Hart. They all lived in the Titusville district, and some of Jobs descendants went to Western Pennsylvania. Theophilus descendants, as far as known, are mostly in Ohio. Job does not belong where placed in the Phillips family, as given in "Cooleys Early Settlers of Trenton and Ewing." He is said by some who have given some study to the Phillipses to be a cousin of John Phillips, of Pleasant Valley.
Parmer Phillips, who marred a Rebecca Phillips, also lived in Titusville vicinity, and this Rebecca Phillips had a sister, Jerusha Phillips who married Dickerson Roberts.
These, all of Titusville, except the Reverend John Lott Phillip and Buchram Phillips, also are unidentified:
John Phillips, who married Mary Wiggins.
Mary Phillips, who married Jesse Titus.
Montgomery Phillips.
Edmund Phillips, who married Hannah Hart.
Lott Phillips, who married Hannah Hart and died before 1780.
Lott Phillips, who married Sarah Bainbridge.
Rev. John Lott Phillips, Class 1774, Princeton (related to Mrs. Phoebe Warner, of Princeton.)
Andrew Phillips.
Buchram Phillips.
(To be continued in the Beacon next week).
