Subject: [NJHUNTER] Names From a Hunterdon County Quilt in Australia

Hi All,
I wanted to share an email I received from a Judy Martin, some of the names
might be interesting to some of you. Her email is listed at the end of
this first message
I am a member of a Quilt Study Group and we have come across a Signature
Quilt which has the name Baltis Pickel and Mary Pickel inscribed on it.
There are also several people with the surname 'Dilly' and an inscription
which says 'March 17th at 1851 at the head of the spring at Brandy Road.'
There are several other names but I won't list those this time.
I'm curious to know if this might have any connection to your family and if
so, could you fill me in...we would like to be able to identify some more
of the people inscribed and get some idea of why the quilt was made.
I look forward to hearing from you and hope that 'your' Baltis is ours as
well.
Kind regards
Judy Martin

I replied to her and she sent back the names.
>What a delight to have such a prompt reply!
>There are about 36 names on the quilt, they're handwritten in 'indian' ink.
>I have had a look at the 1880 census and all the 'Dilly' names are spelt
>'ey'...The signatures are all in the same hand so it isn't, in fact, a
>signature quilt but a name quilt.
>I'll list all the names for you and you may be able to see or find a
>connection. We may have the totally wrong area but so many of the names
>came up in Hunterdon Co. that it appears likely that it is from that region.
>I look forward to any clues you may be able to provide.
>Sincerely

>Pickle names. I admire your tenacity.
>Look forward to the next chapter...........J.M.
I have sent her the information on the Hunterdon County Web Site as well as
the information on the Historical Societies.
As time goes on I'll have some pics taken of the quilt and get a copy to
you along with the info I've been able to put together.
Are you able to send me a map of the Hunterdon Co area?... I have no idea
how these villages relate to each other.
