Hi Paula,
I can't help you in the time period of 1700s, but the Mahlon Smith you note in your email is not the blacksmith who made the iron works for the Court House. There was another Mahlon Smith, perhaps related to this one who lived during the early 1800s. I have him documented nearly every year in the Hunterdon Gazette. He is also the person who lived in the Doric House which now houses the artifacts of the Hunterdon County Historical Society. Go to the Web Site noted at the end of this email message [www.rootsweb.com/~njhunter], look in the Index for the Hunterdon Gazette and that is the Mahlon Smith to whom I refer.
Regards,
Bill

Subject: [NJHUNTER] CASE / SMITH
Hello,
I've always read the CASE inquires with hopes that they would shed
light on my family, but a CASE - SMITH combo in Hunterdon Co. is
definitely challenging! I am looking for information concerning the
parents of Mahlon SMITH (b 16 Dec 1793 in Raritan Tsp. d 20 Oct 1889
buried in Flemington Presbyterian). His parents according to his death
certificate were Ann CASE and Jacob SMITH both of whom were born in the
US. Mahlon is the blacksmith who made the wrought iron gates of the
county court house. Thanks for your help, Paula
