I too have a Mahlon Smith in Hunterdon Co. He is Mahlon J. Smith (13 Dec 1828 - 2 Aug 1907).
I now have his parents as Isaac Smith and Ann Teneick. I have Isaac's father as Jacob. Mother
unknown. Could be this Jacob is the Jacob that Paula mentioned. Based on the following I
often think Jacob's father was Jeremiah Smith.

"Agreement dated 19 April 1818. The heirs of Jeremiah Smith, dec'd late of Amwell voluntarily
and seriously enter into a matter of permanent, inviolable engagement or agreement with Jacob
Smith, the natural son of said Jeremiah Smith. 'Withnesseth that we the legal heirs and
representatives of the estate of Jeremiah Smith, dec'd...taking into consideration the faithful
service of Jacob Smith, by which services we verily believe said estate has been much
benefitted do, for and in consideration of said services and of the love and affection we have
for said Jacob Smith as a connection of our family, agree and engage for ourselves, and heirs,
executors and administrators that the said Jacob Smith shall have for his own proper use and
enjoyment one share in said estate that shall be precisely half as valuable as either of the
shares of the said estate that shall be lawfull of sd. estate by either of the lawful sons of
the sd. Jeremiah Smith and we further, inasmuch as is in our powers, authorize Joseph Hankinson
and Jacob Johnson the proper administrators of the estate and their successors to give as soon
as may be lawfull and convenient the said share to Jacob Smith or his heirs...' He, in turn,
agrees not to press for more. Signed by: Margaret Smith, Isaac Smith, Jacob Emmans, Lenah
Emmans, Joseph Carkuff, Christeen Carkuff, James Wyckoff, Mary Wyckoff, and Jacob Smith. Wit:
E.W. Arford and Fothard Voorhees. 5 May 1818. (p. 259 of Volume I of Special Deeds located in
the Office of the Hunterdon County Clerk, Hall of Records, Flemington, NJ; as quoted in
D'Autrechy, Some Records of Old Hunterdon County 1707-1838, pp. 25-26.)

While trying to find his parents I gathered a little information on Mahlon Smith. Here it is:

Listing on 1850 census for Raritan Twp, pg 76; dwelling 413' family 457 for Mahlon Smith (Age
55, farmer valuation 2600) also in house Phebe Smith (age 59) and Ann Smith (age 89).

Marriage records of Hunterdon Co lists:

Smith, Mahlon and Lucy G. Aller 20 Sep 1836 by VanArsdale
Smith, Mahlon and Theodosia Moore 10 Dec 1835 by Bartolette

There was a Mahlon Smith who was executor of his bother John's will. John was
of Readington. his wife was Sarah. Will dtd 12 Sep 1857, pr 18 Jun 1862

Winter 1994 Ed of Hunterdon Historical Newsletter has following excerpt from 29 March 1854
issue of Hunterdon Gazette. "Dissolution of Partnership, Notice is hereby given that the
partnership heretofore existing between the subscribers, under the name of Smith and Son, is
this day being dissolved by mutual consent....Mahlon Smith Isaac Smith. The blacksmithing
business will be carried on in future at the same place by the subscribers who have this day
formed a partnership under the name of M. Smith and Co... M. Smith, Isaac Smith, John F.S.
Smith".

On pg 329 of Snell's HHSC there is a map of Flemington in 1822 it shows Mahlon Smith's
residence and blacksmith-shop where Isaac Smith's widow now lives.

Marriage On Thursday, the 9th inst., by the Rev. J. M. Olmstead, Mr. Peter J. Smith, to Miss
Deborah A., daughter of Mr. Mahlon Smith, all of Flemington. (HCD 15 Jun 1842)
