Hello Chris,
From my own research in Hunterdon County, The book you are probably referring to is a compilation of the records found in the Hunterdon County Clerk's Office located on Main Street, Flemington, NJ. Or, they could be records of marriages at the NJ State Archives in Trenton. Prior to May 1, 1848, records were kept at the County level. After that date, by Law, they were (supposed) to be kept at Trenton, so the marriage record you are interested in is most likely at Trenton.
Prior to that date, it was up to the Minister, Justice of the Peace, or whomever had the authority to perform the Wedding Ceremony to report the event at the County level. (And this would also be true for after that date!)
Since you are interested in 'after 1848', write to Division of Archives and Records Management, 185 West State Street, CN 307, Trenton, NJ 08625.
My Project is Indexing and computerizing the Hunterdon Gazette and 1825 through 1840 has been completed to date. Israel Poulson was noted to have lived in Amwell Township until it was divided and the part where he lived became Delaware Township. He is noted to have owned land near Head Quarters and an "Israel Poulson" was elected Collector of Amwell Township in the late 1820s. In the 1830s a "Rev. Israel Poulson" was a minister performing marriages in Delaware Township. They may be one and the same, but I have not research this further.
The work on the Hunterdon Gazette continues, see Web Site: http://www.rootsweb.com/~njhunter/
and we will probably be releasing the second CD for the years 1835 - 1844 by the end of Summer. The years of interest to you will probably be completed sometime in 2004!
And your final questions:
Is there a collection of his records available for research? Would his records contain any more information than what the twp clerk wrote down?
I would guess a NO to both.
Since you are only about 2 1/2 hours from Flemington, why don't you plan a trip up to check the records yourself. You will need at least 2 days to do a thorough investigation. All places of interest: County Clerk, Surrogate, and [most importantly] the Hunterdon Country Historical Society; are within a few minutes walking distance of each other in Flemington. The HCHS has one of the most extensive collections of local genealogical and historical County collections in [excuse my bragging] the whole USA!
Regards,
Bill

Subject: [NJHUNTER] Marriage records
I recently found an entry on an LDS microfilm of a
bound volume of Hunterdon marriages between 1848-1867.
This book is a collection of township/borough clerk
marriage record book pages. My question is: upon
what were the twp clerks basing their entries? Was it
oral or were they working from some type of record
that was forwarded to them? Also, the marriage I am
interested in was performed by Israel Poulson (Jr?).
Is there a collection of his records available for
research? Would his records contain any more
information than what the twp clerk wrote down?
