...and we have a few questions that you all might be able to help us
with.
First off, we've found the following about our 4th great grandparents:
[Massachusetts Magazine, No. X October, 1796, Vol. VIII p.575 (Monthly
Chronologer section)]
PHILADELPHIA, SEPT. 23.
On the 14th inst. there was a violent storm, with thunder, lightning
and hail, near Flemington, New-Jersey. Many of the hail stones measured
from 6 to 7 inches round, which indented the shingles and boards of the
houses and fences, and destroyed a quantity of grain, etc. in the
ground.
About a half mile away from the town on the hill, at the cooper's shop,
Thomas Jobs and his wife were killed on the spot. The child which she
had in her arms was a little burnt, but is expected to recover. A woman
lying in bed, had her hair singed, and was otherwise hurt; and a little
boy was much hurt in the same house, and it is feared he will not
recover the use of his limbs. The chimnies at both ends of the house
are bursted, and the building was left a mere wreck.
The above Thomas Jobs, and his wife having company, gave up their bed
to their guests and lay upon the floor, with their heads towards the
chimney stack, when the accident happened -- Those who were not injured,
lay on a bedstead. This terrifying tempest lasted from the early part
of the afternoon, with little intermission, until 11 or 12 o'clock at
night.
We'd need help with the following:
1) Where would Thomas Jobs and his wife Catherine be buried around
Flemington and are these cemeteries surveyed? We'd love to find these
headstones but would really like to know where they could be, first.
2) Since the parents were killed, the child that was a little burnt
(Samuel Jobes) was taken care of by his grandparents Philip and
Catherine Yawger who moved to NY in 1800. Would there be any orphan's
court type records for this custody transfer?
3) Is the mentioned hill "Thatcher's Hill"? The article makes it sound
like there's only one hill near Flemington and is 1/2 mile outside of
town.
4) Would there be church records in the area that might have records of
Thomas Jobs and Catherine Yawger's wedding? NJ seems to have these
records and list the wedding date as June 2 or 21, 1795. We think that
the ceremony took place near Fairmount, Tewksbury, Hunterdon Co., NJ.
5) Are there land records in the area that would list transfers of
titles for the Jobs or Yawger properties prior to 1800?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Genealogically Yours,
Chris and Debbie Jobes
