There was a West Portal Methodist Church est. abt 1849. Neighboring churches
included the Bloomsbury Methodist and Bloomsbury Presbyterian Churches.
I see a 1869 marriage notice in the Hunterdon County Democrat for a William
Vliet of Bethlehem taking place at the Asbury M E Church.
An interfaith marriage might cause an elopement to Warren County, or across
the Delaware to PA (a Mary Vliet of Bethlehem married a Harry Martin at the
First Methodist Church in Easton in 1873). Lambertville was also a popular
site for weddings.
