Carl;

I have umpteen documentation concerning the Johnson connection to the Ferry
and happened to run into a Petition for Tavern license for James Slack. It
reads:

"To the honourable Judges and justices of the peace in their Court of General
Quarters To ?? at Trenton in and for the County of Hunterdon, assembled the
first Tuesday in May anno: Dom: 1772 .

The Humble petition of the Subscribers, Neighbours .. James Slack the Barer
hereof to your Worships humbly showeth that the said James Slack so far as we
understand is a person capable of keeping a good house of Entertainment, that
the House in which he lives had by several years experience been found
necessary and convenient for the Entertainment of Travellers and transacting of public
business, and that therefore we humbly recommend him to your worships, as a
proper person to keep Tavern where he now lives, it being as a ferry regre??
your worthy's licence to him for that purpose for the ... and your petitioners
as in duty bound will ever pray,
Signed: Joseph Burroughs, Henry Margerum, Henry Mershon"

I will try to scan this original for you if you'd like.

Carol
