Hello Laurence,
Assuming first that you mean the 1880 census, not 1800, I have this
entry under my notes for the unknown father of W. Ralph TEATS, who
married Anna Maria Brady in 1845 in New York City. I have several notes
for a Jeremiah.
In 1860:
Peter T. TEATS, Tewksbury, p. 45 (ae 39, farmer, with Catherine 39,
George 16, farm laborer, Jeremiah 13, Anna E. 11, David 7 and Emily 4)
In 1870:
Peter T. TEATS, 49, Tewksbury, p. 375 (farmer, with Catharine 49, David
F. 18, works on farm, Emily M. 14)
George A. TEATS, 25, Tewksbury, p. 377 (farmer, with Mary A. 23, Emma L.
2, Arnold 11/12, Jeremiah 24, works on farm, and Alvah Todd, 24, works
on farm)
and, as you found, in 1880:

So it would seem that Jeremiah was the son of Peter T. Teats and his
wife Catherine, who were still living nearby in 1880 themselves:

A search in 1860 and 1870 in Tewksbury, Hunterdon Co., for William Lance
and a daughter Mary Jane, b. ca 1848, brings these up:
1870
Lance, Wm M., 72, Clinton, Roll 869, p. 111
Lauce, William, 52, Lebanon, Roll 870, p. 253
Larce, William, 50, Clinton, Roll 869, p. 93
Larue, William, 54, Clinton, Roll 869, p. 87
Picking William LAUCE first, because the age is closest, we have a
winner (and it really is LANCE on the page) -- (and none of the others
match):
Lebanon Township, P.O. Clarksville, census taken 14 Aug 1870
House 224, family 248
LANCE, William, 52, farmer, $6500, $1450, b. NJ
", Margaret, 47, housekeeping, b. NJ
", Isaac S., 22, farm, b. NJ
", Abraham M., 19, farm, b. NJ
", Mary J., 20, housework, b. NJ
1860
Lance, William, Lebanon, p. 61
Lance, William, Clinton, p. 642
Lance, William H., Lebanon, p. 95
Lance, William M., Clinton, p. 693
Neither of the men in Clinton are right. Bingo, William in Lebanon, p.
61. The top of the page is black, but the census was taken sometime in
June 1860:
House 3, family 3
LANCE, William, 44, farmer, $4500, $1250, b. NJ
", Margaret, 36, b. NJ
", Samuel, 17, farm labourer, b. NJ
", Isaac, 12, b. NJ, at school
", Mary J. 11, b. NJ, at school
", Abraham, 5, at school
ROBINSON, Hannah M., 19, domestic, b. NJ
Hope this is the family you're after.
Regards,
Mary Kyritsis
