Thanks to a very rapid response from a helpful lister, I became aware of an
1834 Gazeteer for Hunterdon County which includes the following text...
Flemington
post town of Hunterdon co., situate at the northern extremity of the valley,
lying between Rock mountain and Mount Carmel, and near the southeast foot of
the latter, ...
Mount Carmel
a mountain hamlet of Amwell township, Hunterdon co., 3 miles northwest from
Flemington; contains a tavern and some 4 or 5 dwellings, and a store. The
soil around it is very clay, cold, and at present not very productive, but
it is improvable by the use of lime.
