I copied some 1780's tax lists from microfilm at the HCHS last week. I had trouble both there and on the copies with making out exactly what was written in the column headings across the top of the pages. Part of the problem is the way they used to make a lower-case "s" look like what we see as a lower case "f". Anyway, this is what I think I can make out:

Householders, Merchants, Fisheries, Sawmills, Gristmills, Tanyards, Ferries, Single Man of House (?), Single Men, Slaves, Stills, Taverns, Riding Chairs (?), Covered Waggons [sic], Convening houses.

It is that last entry that looks like "Convening houses" that I am unsure of. My ancestor has a "1" count in this column, so I'd like to know what it means. Can anyone help? Thanks.
