Carl,

Not double taxation but Daniel Coxe, proprietor actually made the
Hopewell Hunterdon Co. residents pay for the land they had already paid
for earlier. There was a petition of folks who signed protesting this -
most of the people succumbed and paid twice but many left and my ancestor
John Parke, along with Thomas Smith & Barthlomew Anderson protested by
tar and feathering their own farms and torching them, and then fleeing
across the Delaware in dead of night and eventually wound up in Hampshire
Co. VA which was at that time Frederick Co. VA - this is before George
Washington came in and surveyed the land - Fairfax land grants - John
Parke was one of the first to have his land in what became Hampshire Co.
but was then Frederick surveyed by young 19 yr old George Washington - I
have a copy of the survey. The petition by the way can be found in the
Burlington Co. Court records book and there have been some good articles
written about the Coxe incident by Ethel Stroupe & Gloria Padach - I can
scout all these things up for you if you are really interested.
