Pam, the aunt that collected these clippings was my great Aunt Ida Mae APGAR. Her parents were Charles APGAR and Blanche JACQUISH. My line of APGARS are related to many of the old Oldwick names but I don't know about the ROCHE's or BUSH's.
PLEASE NOTE - The following newspaper clippings are from a collection found
after my great Aunt passed away. She unfortunately made no note of what paper
they came from or the date. I felt they may still provide important clues for
somebody and other listers agreed so I have been posting them regardless.
Andrew A. KALLE Dies at Whitehouse Home
Andrew A. KALLE, sixty-two years old, died suddenly at his home in Whitehouse on Sunday morning at 6:30 from heart disease. Mr. KALLE had been in poor health for about two years. He was born in Germany and came to this country about forty years ago and settled in New York. He was a cabinet maker by trade. He moved to a farm on the Oldwick road about seventeen years ago, but about two years ago moved to Whitehouse.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mary A. KALLE, a son, John F. KALLE, of Whitehouse and three daughters, Mrs. Arch HILDEBRANT, and Mrs. John DILLEY, of Whitehouse Station, and Miss Kathryn KALLE, at home. He also leaves four grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at the late home on Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Rev. H.F. SENNE, pastor of the Whitehouse Reformed Church, will officiate. Interment will be made in the Rural Hill Cemetery, in Whitehouse, by funeral directors Coughlin & Son, of Oldwick.
Kills Self On Third Attempt
Pottersville Young Woman Slashes Throat, Then Burns Herself
Cause Due To Illness
Three ghastly methods of suicide were tried by Miss Mary Josephine AMERMAN, 32 years old, before she was finally successful. Incidentally, the tragedy proved the greatest sensation that the village of Pottersville has experienced in many years.
Brooding over prolonged ill health, the young woman a month ago tried to make way with herself by swallowing a dose of iodine. She recovered from this.
Late last Tuesday afternoon, while alone in her home, she decided upon another form of suicide much more tragic than the first attempt.
Securing a large butcher knife, she whetted the instrument and then, standing before a mirror in her bedroom, slashed her throat from ear to ear.
She bled profusely but did not sever the jugular vein. After standing in front of the mirror for a time she made her way to another room. There were large pools of blood in both rooms to show that her movements were deliberate.
Finding that the knife had not produced the desired result she then went downstairs to the kitchen. Here she secured a can of kerosene and poured the contents over her body. Then she set fire to her clothing.
This was the situation when her two sisters, Mrs. Emma FIELD and Miss Myrtle AMERMAN, found her when they returned home. They succeeded in beating the flames out but she was terribly burned by this time.
Dr. C.R. KAY of Peapack was called and he had her removed to the Somerville Hospital. Nothing could be done for her and she died shortly after the arrival of the ambulance.
Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jacob AMERMAN, were in Brooklyn at the time attending the funeral of Mr. AMERMAN's mother.
The body was removed to the morgue of Daniel J. COUGHLIN at Califon on Wednesday, where it was prepared for burial. The funeral was held at Pottersville at two o'clock Saturday afternoon. County Physician Maurice BOROW of Bound Brook isssued a burial permit.
Miss AMERMAN, who was well known in that section, had been employed by numerous families in various forms of housework. Lately she had been melancholy, due to ill health.
