PLEASE NOTE - The following newspaper clippings are from a collection found
after my great Aunt passed away. She unfortunately made no note of what paper
they came from or the date. I felt they may still provide important clues for
somebody and other listers agreed so I have been posting them regardless.

Oldwick Woman Dies, Local Man Critically Injured in Accident

DOUGHERTY Given a Chance to Recover

Assistant Jail Warden, Two Friends in Crash Near Bedminster

Car Goes Over Bank

Mrs. Mildred AMERMAN, 50, of Oldwick was fatally injure; Charles M. DOUGHERTY, 38, assistant warden of the Somerset County Jail, suffered fractured ribs and a punctured lung, and Mrs. Margaret EICK, 26, of Oldwick, received severe lacerations, when a car in which they were riding at 2 p.m. Wednesday skidded on leaves on the rain-drenched highway, Route 31, near Bedminster, sideswiped a pole and plunged down an eight-foot embankment.

DOUGHERTY, who is on the danger list at the hospital here, has a chance to recover if pneumonia or other complications do not set in, it was said late last night. He was reported as holding his own yesterday.

Go to Aid of Victims

Mrs. AMERMAN and DOUGHERTY were taken from the car in a critical condition by John BERGSTEN, who lives near-by, with the assistance of a passing motorist.

DOUGHERTY was rushed to the office of Dr. Frank L. FIELD of Bedminster and Mrs. AMERMAN and Mrs. EICK were given first aid treatment by Dr. J.W. CRAWFORD of Bedminster and Dr. W.J. ALBRECHT of Somerville, who chanced to be near the scene of the accident. All of the injured were then brought to Somerset Hospital
here where Mrs. AMERMAN died soon after she was admitted.

Besides fractured ribs and a punctured lung, DOUGHERTY suffered a crushed shoulder. He resides at 68 West Cliff street, this borough, with his wife and four children, the youngest an infant.

Had Been Visiting

The assistant jail warden had journeyed to Oldwick earlier in the day to visit his cousin, Mrs. AMERMAN. Together, with Mrs. EICK, they had done to Pluckemin in Mrs. AMERMAN's coupe to visit Mrs. AMERMAN's father, Jacob DOUGHERTY.

They were returning to Oldwick at the time of the accident. It is not known who was driving the car. Mr. BERGSTEN, the only eye witness to the accident, said the machine zig-zagged back and forth across the highway after hitting the pole and finally went down the embankment. The car was little damaged.

The accident was investigated by the State Police of South Somerville station, who assisted in taking the injured to the hospital.
