PLEASE NOTE - The following newspaper clippings are from a collection found
after my great Aunt passed away. She unfortunately made no note of what paper
they came from or the date. I felt they may still provide important clues for
somebody and other listers agreed so I have been posting them regardless.
Driver Killed As Trucks Sideswipe
Joseph GORDON, Believed to Have Dozed Off at Route 29 Intersection
Both Trucks Badly Smashed
Dozing at the wheel is believed to have caused the death of Joseph GORDON, 24, of Oldwick, driver of an oil truck when his machine sideswiped a coal truck on Route 30 near the intersection of Route 29 at 5:45 o'clock Tuesday morning.
GORDON was thrown from his machine to the concrete. He suffered injuries to his head, a broken arm and other injuries. The truck he was operating is owned by Worline Oil Company, of Clinton. D.P. CARTWRIGHT of Clinton, driver of another Worline Oil Company truck, came along following the accident and loaded GORDON into his truck carrying him to the office of Dr. S.R. MILLER, at Pennington. He was given first aid and then taken in an ambulance to McKinley Hospital where he died soon after arriving.
State Trooper NELSON investigated the accident.
As nearly as could be determined the oil truck, which was headed north, struck the coal truck, which was southbound, and operated by Charles KAUFMAN, on KAUFMAN's side of the road. The crash tore the wheels off the side of the coal truck and upset it, scattering stove coal in heaps over the roadway. The front wheels and axle of the oil truck were driven under the body and a hole was torn in the gasoline tank allowing the liquid to escape.
KAUFMAN was only slightly cut. He was arrested by Trooper NELSON and arraigned before Justice of the Peace George WEBSTER as a material witness and held in $1,000 bail for appearance before the Grand Jury.
GORDON had been working thru the night in hauling gasoline from the Trenton wharf to the company's bulk plant at Clinton. It is believed he dozed off, allowing his truck to swerve over in KAUFMAN's path.
