PLEASE NOTE - The following newspaper clippings are from a collection found
after my great Aunt passed away. She unfortunately made no note of what paper
they came from or the date. I felt they may still provide important clues for
somebody and other listers agreed so I have been posting them regardless.
Mrs. William T. APGAR
Mrs. Louella APGAR, sixty-three years old, died on Sunday morning at 9:15 in the Somerville Hospital, where she had been a patient since last Wednesday. Mrs. APGAR had been ill for some time with asthma and complications developed. Her son-in-law, William J. LAYDEN, gave blood for a transfusion in an effort to save her, but to no avail.
Mrs. APGAR was a daughter of the late George and Jane Castner ANDERSON and was born near Anthony, where her father was engaged in the undertaking business, but for the past forty years she had resided in the Whitehouse vicinity.
She was a member of the Methodist Church of Fairmount, but since coming to this community attended the church at Whitehouse and Readington. She was highly esteemed by all who knew her.
She is survived by her husband, William T. APGAR, and one daughter, Mrs. William J. LAYDEN, and two granddaughters, Muriel and Anita LAYDEN, all of Whitehouse. Also two sisters, Mrs. John T. HILL, of Somerville, and Mrs. John BESSICK, of Port Murray, and one brother, John ANDERSON, of Oxford.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the late home in Whitehouse. Rev. William G. BOWERING, pastor of the Whitehouse Methodist Church, will officiate. Interment will be made in the Presbyterian Cemetery of Fairmount.
Mrs. Elizabeth Ann COX, 29, wife of Frederick COX, Sr., died at her home in Easton Thursday at 4 p.m. after an illness of one week from jaundice. She was born at Califon, and was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George HANN of Parker. She is survived by her husband and three small children: Frederick, Jr., Anne and Barbara, six months old; also her parents and one sister, Mrs. Louella H. O'NEIL of East Orange. Funeral services were held at her late home, 2430 Birch Street, Easton. Interment was made in the Lower Valley Union Cemetery.
A surprise shower was held Saturday evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Edgar WELSH at Bissell in honor of the approaching wedding of their only daughter, Miss Evelyn Adeline to John Sweazy HOFFMAN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gifford HOFFMAN. She was the recipient of many presents. Various games were played and refreshments were served to 60 of their friends and relatives. Guests were present from High Bridge, Bissell, Plainfield, Annandale, Lebanon, Cokesbury and Oldwick.
Miss Evelyn Adeline WELSH, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edgar WELSH of Bissell and John Sweazy HOFFMAN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gifford W. HOFFMAN of this place were married Oct. 31st at the home of the bride's parents. Rev. Benjamin F. WHITE, pastor of the Lebanon Reformed Church, performed the ceremony. The bride's maid of honor was Miss Emma ORD of Plainfield, the groom's cousin, and the best man was William ADAMS of Somerville. Only immediate members of both families were present. Following the ceremony a reception and wedding supper were held at the home. The couple will reside in the double house of the bridegroom's parents in Mountain Avenue. The occassion also marked the 58th anniversary of the wedding of the bridegroom's grandmother, Mrs. Emma HOFFMAN who attended the wedding and is in her eighty-third year.
Baseball Pitcher One Year Too Old
When Ralph BUNN came to High Bridge to live with his uncle, Charles R. NAUGHRIGHT, and entered the senior class last fall, everybody looked forward to the school baseball season. He was known as one of the best ball hurlers in the schools of this section and last year was the star pitcher of the Hackettstown school team.
But Ralph can't pitch for High Bridge this spring. He has discovered he was 20 years old last October and therefore ineligible for interscholastic competition. The discovery was quite a surprise. In the family Bible, the year of his birth was recorded 1914. On his first school registration card at Long Valley, the year of his birth was stated 1914, and on subsequent school records the same year was named.
Just as a matter of routine requirements of all new students, Ralph was asked for his birth certificate when he entered the High Bridge High School. Much to his surprise the birth certificate showed that he was born in October, 1913. The supervising principal thought the birth certificate date must be a mistake. Recently he went to Trenton and looked up the original birth certificate, and there the year 1913 was plainly written six days after the boy's birth, by the family physician.
ROBINSON - LANCE
Califon- Announcement has been made of the marriage of Miss Hannan LANCE, daughter of John LANCE of Fairmount, and Barton ROBINSON of Califon. The ceremony was performed Saturday at the home of the bride's father by Rev. Frank DEPEW, pastor of Fairmount Presbyterian Church. Upon their return from a wedding trip they will live in Fairmount.
CREGAR - VROOM
Miss Edith M. VROOM, daughter of John VROOM, of Oldwick, and Lorenzo D. CREGAR, son of Mr. and Mrs. Winifred CREGAR, of Lower Valley, were married Saturday afternoon by Rev. Harry P. KING, a former pastor of Califon Methodist Church, at Wanaque Methodist parsonage. Mr. and Mrs. CREGAR will reside at Califon.
