PLEASE NOTE - The following newspaper clippings are from a collection found
after my great Aunt passed away. She unfortunately made no note of what paper
they came from or the date. I felt they may still provide important clues for
somebody and other listers agreed so I have been posting them regardless.

Fireman Play Other Roles

Oldwick - Fire-fighting isn't the sole function of the Oldwick Fire Company, now in the 11th year of existence. Its member often turn a hand at anything that needs doing in this vicinity. Besides Oldwick, communities served are Bissell, Mountainville, Lamington, Fairmount and rural areas on the Oldwick-Whitehouse road.

Organized in 1938

The company was organized in 1938. Funds were raised for the purchase of a modern apparatus and a building to house equipment. Designed by a member, the building was constructed with volunteer labor.

Trustees of the Methodist Church donated land in the village for the firehouse. In return for community support firemen are often called upon to relieve water shortages, such as during the recent drouth, to assist at floods and to fill wells and cisterns.

During drouth conditions this year the company offered pumping service to residents of the district. LaFarge's Bridge, just north of Oldwick, was the point from which containers were filled. These were then transported to locations where the water scarcity was acute.

Officers Listed

Officers are W. Lincoln ARMAGAST, president; John M. VAN DOREN, treasurer; James APGAR, secretary; Daniel A. COUGHLIN, chief; Charles A. HILDEBRANT, assistant chief, and Michael BROWN and Howard HAYES, foreman.

Officers of the ladies' auxiliary, an integral part of the firemen's social functions and fund drives, are Mrs. George YAWGER, president; Mrs. Leroy LANE, vicepresident; Mrs. David HENDERSHOT, secretary and Mrs. Robert J. VROOM, treasurer.
