Hi Charlene,

I checked the book "The Loyalists of New Jersey" printed by the New Jersey Historical Society in 1927 and reprinted by Heritage Books (which is where I probably bought it from their catalog) has a one line reference (page 318) as follows:

WOORTMAN, John, high treason, com., 1778. (M.C.S.272)

MCS -- Minutes of the Council of Safety of New Jersey. 1777, 1778. The 272 number may be a page number. The State Library in Trenton may have these records -- they are well stocked with colonial records.

The oo spelling of his name suggests a Dutch heritage, so you may not want to pass up any Dutch records that come along.

Evelyn

I'm researching a Loyalist ancestor, too, but I'm not sure about the county.
Hunterdon, I think, so if you get any suggestions, I need them, also. I'm
looking for the John Woortman/Wortman that was declared a traitor by the
Committee for Safety in 1778. I think he went to New Brunswick with his
family in the 1783 Spring Fleet, but there were 5 or 6 men named John
Wortman in that area.
