Hi, Evelyn. I first found "my" John Wortman in the book LOYALISTS OF NEW
JERSEY. He's probably descended from the Dutch Woertmans who came to New
York in the 1600s. Several of the next generation went to New Jersey. I
got a copy of the page from the Council of Safety Minutes from the state
archives, but it still didn't say which county. There were Tory Wortmans
in Queens County, NY so maybe "my" Wortman left NJ and went to them. I've
learned that men had to be within the British lines for a year in order to
be eligible for supplies from Carleton to be given out in New Brunswick when
the Loyalists got there. He had one son born during that time.
Thanks for your suggestions.
Charlene
