John,
Thanks so much! I'm at a point in my research where I've hit the proverbial
wall on my ancestor Philip BELLIS, who was married in KY but born "in NJ"
circa 1792. Figuring which BELLIS/BELLISFELT branch
(Hunterdon/Somerset/Sussex/Warren Co NJ) he belonged to has been difficult,
so I'm looking at military units and trying to triangulate surnames who end
in close to Philip in KY. I've looked over some of the Archive microfilm,
but it's very tedious when you don't know what surname you're looking for...

Strykers is on the NJ State Library Website:

Good luck on the unit level. Since many revolutionary records were lost or
destroyed, it might be the best you can get. Another route, if you are
looking for info on a unit and know the commander(s) is to look up the
commanding officers at the Archives. They will list some more details about
their service based on different sources (e.g., pension records of soldiers,
pay recs, etc.) It's difficult to build a reliable record this way for an
officer or soldier. You may not know when they mustered, if a soldier
mustered when called upon to do so, how long their service was (3 mos, 6
mos. 9 mos.), also regiments were not usually called up in their entirety.
There is a lot to be considered.
Good luck. I have tried to research the 2nd battalion of Hunterdon, and put
together a list of soldiers and units based on records from Strykers and
some primary sources I have come across. It is not comprehensive and only
adds a bit more than what Strykers did.

STRYKKER's "Officers and Men of New Jersey in the Revolutionary War" lists
these individuals
2nd Regiment Hunterdon, Capt Maxwell's Company:
Capt John MAXWELL, Commander (apparently served in Sussex County militia as
a Lieutenant, if I'm reading Strykker's info correctly)
Lt Robert MAXWELL
Pvt Andrew BELLOS (BELLIS)
Pvt Richard CURREN
2nd Regiment Hunterdon, Staff:
Lt. BARTON (fnu) served on the staff of the 2nd Regiment Hunterdon
Could anyone help to answer these questions:
1. Is this the same John MAXWELL whose name is in the Sussex Co. Deed Books
as having deposed witnesses James BISHOP & Robt ALLISON on 28 February 1797.
This was with regard to the December 1796 transfer of land from the heirs of
Isaac SWAYZE of Oxford to the heirs of Joseph LEMON, also of Oxford. This
land was located near the Beaver Brook, presumably in the vicinity of
Swayzes Mills.
2. Was Robert MAXWELL related to his company commander, John?
3. Was Richard CURREN's name mispelled? Was he actually a CURRENT?
4. What was Lt. BARTON's first name?
Does anyone know if STRYKKER's book comes in digital format? It lists
soldier's names in alphabetical order, but I would love to be able to query
his data by military unit level (the book does this for officers, but not
enlisted men.)
Thanks!
