Hi Bob,
The reason I'm researching MAXWELL is to try to geographically triangulate
BELLIS/CURRENT/BARTON in time and place. I don't believe I have any MAXWELL
in my lineage. If your MAXWELL lived in Sussex (Warren) Co., however, this
would be an interesting piece of information to know and may help to sort
out DILS/BELLIS connections in that county.
I have very little DILS (DILTS, DILTZ) in my database (you can query the
link below) but I strongly suspect there are more BELLIS/DILS relationships
in Sussex (Warren) Co. and perhaps in OH or KY to be discovered. Any
movement of DILS to KY would be informative.
Apparently BELLISFELTs and DILS knew each other back in Germany and may have
journeyed together to America on the same ships. I have yet to pinpoint
the ship that BELLISFELTS were transported on, however. There appears to
have been a movement from Germany circa 1740, but incomplete information
suggests BELLISFELTs were here by roughly 1723/30, and maybe even made it
over in 1709 and were stuck in NY.
This is what I have on Adam BELLIS and his wife Catrina DILTS of Somerset Co
NJ (which I may have sent you in the past)
http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=REG&db=rozbellis1&id=I301 What's
interesting is that most of Adam and Catrina's children headed west
(initially OH and KY), although some of them ultimately returned to NJ. The
individual named Henry (#18 in my database) had a daughter Jane Van
Middlesworth BELLIS who married John Philip SOUSA. Henry and his father
returned East after Henry's mother died in Cincinnati. Henry apparently
settled in the Philadelphia area. It was there that Henry's daughter Jane
met Sousa (a movie was made in 1952 "Stars and Stripes Forever" with Clifton
Webb and Ruth Hussey. In one of the scenes, his band/orchestra is playing
his new-fangled, cutting-edge, German-style "oom-paa" music that everyone's
having fun dancing to -- at a formal White House affair, no less. He steps
off the conductor's podium, walks to his wife and asks: "Miss Bellis, may I
have this dance?" Mind you, I don't know where my BELLIS ancestors
intersect with Adam's, but it was still a kick to hear this... And come to
find out, my brother-in-law's ancestor, who had immigrated from Germany to
Long Island NY in the '20s, played in Sousa's band... What are the odds of
that?
Adam and Catrina BELLIS apparently remained in Somerset NJ after the Rev
War. Adam's brother, William, who traded off Rev War duty with his brother,
"died of wounds suffered in the Battle of Monmouth" according to family
researchers writing family histories in the late 1890's. But I'm not so
sure that account is accurate. Perhaps William moved west...to KY or
Cincinnati (specifically, I wonder if he went to VOORHEES Station, which
today is located within the boundaries of Cincinnati) with Adam's nieces and
nephews...perhaps William was functioning as "the family adult" for his
nieces and nephews. Or maybe William was propelled west because he had
deserted?
As for KITCHEN, I continually run across this name, but unfortunately
haven't yet made a connection.

Hi Roz, Bob Dils in SW Colorado. Would you have in your Bellis
genealogy any material on the Dils (Dilts,Diltz) surname. I have info
on several Bellis/Dils marriages incl Adam Bellis an ancestor of the
famous bandmaster/composer. Would appreciTR AND Dils data you might
havr. Quite apparently the Dils and Bellis families lived quite close
in Hunterdon Co NJ way back when. I am also descended from the
Maxwells, not the General friend of George Washington and not the
lawyer of Hunterdon Co but apparently a farmer Anything you might have
on the Maxwell surname or the Kitchen family of early to mid 1700s would
be appreciated.

Hunterdon
STRYKKER's "Officers and Men of New Jersey in the Revolutionary War"
lists these individuals
2nd Regiment Hunterdon, Capt Maxwell's Company:
Capt John MAXWELL, Commander (apparently served in Sussex County militia
as a Lieutenant, if I'm reading Strykker's info correctly) Lt Robert
MAXWELL Pvt Andrew BELLOS (BELLIS) Pvt Richard CURREN
2nd Regiment Hunterdon, Staff:
Lt. BARTON (fnu) served on the staff of the 2nd Regiment Hunterdon
Could anyone help to answer these questions:
1. Is this the same John MAXWELL whose name is in the Sussex Co. Deed
Books as having deposed witnesses James BISHOP & Robt ALLISON on 28
February 1797. This was with regard to the December 1796 transfer of
land from the heirs of Isaac SWAYZE of Oxford to the heirs of Joseph
LEMON, also of Oxford. This land was located near the Beaver Brook,
presumably in the vicinity of Swayzes Mills. 2. Was Robert MAXWELL
related to his company commander, John? 3. Was Richard CURREN's name
mispelled? Was he actually a CURRENT? 4. What was Lt. BARTON's first
name?
Does anyone know if STRYKKER's book comes in digital format? It lists
soldier's names in alphabetical order, but I would love to be able to
query his data by military unit level (the book does this for officers,
but not enlisted men.)
Thanks!
