Hello I am new to this list. I am researching Sussex County, New Jersey
I come across other people's records from time to time (not related to
me) that I thought might be worthwhile posting. So.. here is one

Sentence Schuyler to Hang August 30 (Flemington is in Hunterdon county)
Flemington, Aug. 6. - John E. Schuyler was sentenced by Supreme Court
Judge Reed yesterday afternoon to be hanged August 30, for the murber of
Manning Riley. He was to have been executed June 28, but the case was
carried to the Court of Errors and Appeals and a stay granted.
Schuyler was brought into the court room closely guarded by a squad
of constables and Deputy Sheriff Dllts. He was not handcuffed, and
walked with a firm, quick-step, taking a seat beside his counsel.
After sentence he talked with his counsel, and walked back to his
cell with a firm step. He made no comments upon his sentence, other than
proclaiming he was innocent of the crime for which he must hang.
The regular meeting of the Court of Pardon will not be had until
November, but Schuyler's counsel will ask the Governor to summon the
body to listen to an application to have his sentence commuted to life
imprisonment.
