I am forwarding Roxanne's information regarding Hunterdon County records to the 'NJHUNTER' list for those interested in visiting Hunterdon or the State Archives in New Jersey!

Bill---read through your answer to David Hoffman and saw a couple things that you may want to refine.

Surrogate's Office has wills, estates. etc. from 1806 forward. All prior records were called into the Sectetary of State's office. HCHS has these earlier ones on microfilm and there is an index..

Deeds at Hall of Records generally start about 1785 which I guess is, as you said, pretty much after Rev. War. At the Archives there are colonial conveyances of East and West Jersey, with index, of which HCHS has a copy.

The earliest tax records 1770s, are at the State Archives, HCHS has them on microfilm. These is an index for Hunterdon taxpayers at HCHS.

County Archives is out on Route 12, Larry Green, is Records Manager. Had a recently who came to Hall of Records to use something there only to find out after her husband dropped her off and left, that the records she wanted to look at were not there but out at Route 12. Her information came off the internet. It's best to call Green and I don't have the number here at home, before making a trip. Once was he didn't come in on Fridays.

The State Archives was the successor to the Public Record Office, founded in the 1920s. When that occured, Secretary of State records, Department of Defense [Rev. War Records, etc.] were transferred to the Archives, so they do have earlier records than you suggested in your reply. The Vital Statistics begin around 1850.
