Sondra, it was very common back then to honor a friend or relative or public
figure by naming a child after that person's full name- and it was done
about as often with women as with men. So, children often had cumbersome
middle names - and if the honored person's last name had a gender
connotation to it, it might not even fit the gender of the child who was so
lucky to be given the name. For instance, my husband's many times great
uncle was named Hugh Sharon Current. Lucky for me, cuz that was the clue
that sent me on the track of which of the Current brothers in Canada we were
descended from. I researched who Hugh Sharon was, and found out that he was
the stepfather of one of the wives. Bingo! Maybe you could try that - find
out some more history of your Spencer family, by locating the Sarah Lantz
that they admired.

What was the connection between Upper Jersey and Loudon Co., VA? Why did so
many people go from the Jersies to Loudon County?

Hi,

Can anyone help with any information on Sarah Spencer and Thomas Beavers
married 1801 in Loudoun Co. Va. In doing Beavers research, I find Sarah
listed as Sarah Lantz Spencer. Anyone got any ideas why the second name
of LANTZ ???
