Subject: More Newspapers - Ancestry.com

FYI. While on this subject, I figure that I would report on Ancestry.com's newspaper resource. They have the Trenton Times, and the Trenton Evening Times (I'm not sure if there is a real difference). Anyway, the papers often cover events in lower Hunterdon County and I have found a few articles on ancestors and collateral relations. Researching is not as easy as Bill's index or Dennis' search engine. They somehow search the actual newspaper image, and I guess due to the qulaity of the scanned image it does not seem to understand every letter correctly. I was very frustrated at first. And there is no doubt in my mind that the ancestry.com search engine makes many mistakes performing its searches. Regardless, it's another newspaper resource (for a fee, of course - I don't know how much it costs off-hand, and I am not confident in recommending people signing up for this just to see Hunterdon County ancestors). The earliest papers online are from 1883, and the latest are f!
rom 1922.
I'm not sure if the records are complete in between those dates. The most exciting things I got was that in 1902 my ancestor Alexander HIGGINS owned the oldest building in Sand Brook, and I was able to narrow down some dates when my ancestor, Jonathan PHILLIPS, was last seen.
Also, Ancestry is almost done with having every census indexed in some way. The 1910 is online, but there are no direct links to the actual census image. The 1900 census has been started, but NJ is not online yet.
And so no one thinks that I have stock in Ancestry....
Besides the census and newspaper projects, there are not many other resources specific to Hunterdon County. There are no directories. It has Hunterdon marriages from 1795-1875, teh Early Germans book by Chambers, and a few general state resources that I think are widely available in many libraries.
