The Crow name that Kathi Roff mentions is also known as Jeremiah Cray.
There were many with the family name of Cray in the Sourlands, as well
as Hopewell and on into the Lambertville area. My ggrandmother was Phebe
Cray b. 1851 married to William H. Durling, daughter of Jeremiah Cray,
Jr. b.1802 and Adeline/Letty/Allie Unknown/Hegeman (3 different census
spellings-unknown if any are same or Hegeman), granddaughter of John
Cray b. 1770, possible ggranddaughter of Jeremiah Crow d. 1836. Kathleen
Catanio Roff descends from a Daniel Cray and Elizabeth Unknown that I
have not been able to connect to my Jeremiah yet, however we do share
another ancestor in Jan Frederikse Blauw -for who's son John Blauw-
Blawenburg, Somerset County at the foot of the Sourlands is named after.
I agree with Sharon that the "New Jersey's Sourland Mountain" by T. J.
Luce is a fabulous book. Anyone with ancestors and doing research in
this area should see if there are still copies available. The index is
not a complete index, so one can't use that as a guide. There is much
more info in there than what shows up in the index. There is at least
one reference to "Cray" in the book on page 85 in regards to mixed
marriages. This relative I am still looking to connect, a "Charlie Cray
married what was called a colored woman". I have 5 Charles Crays listed
in my file and so far I have not been able to find one on the census
married to a mulatto so I don't know who he is.
Roz Bellis--do we connect with my John Cray b. 1770? I have a large
amount of Cray names. Due to their limited selection of first names, I
have many John, Peter, George, Elizabeth, Daniel, etc. that I am not
sure are the same people. I would appreciate you Cray/Crow info and will
share what I have on this family.

The Sourlands are actually in Hunterdon, Mercer and Somerset Counties.
They go from Lambertville in the west all the way through Montgomery Twp
(where I am) and into Hillsborough Twp on the east side. Hunterdon and
Somerset Counties each have a Preserve for walking and hiking.
There are wonderful old stories and legends pertaining to the Sourlands,
including stories about runaway slaves living there as well as renegarde
Indians (okay, Native Americans) and Hessian soldiers.
A good reference for this area is "New Jersey's Sourland Mountain" by T.
J. Luce. It was published 2001 by Sourland Planning Council. At the
time I posted the ordering info on NJHUNTER, although I have no
connection to the organization. I just think it's a fabulous book!
Good luck with your hunt! There are no Crow listings in the index of the
above book, by the way!

The Sourland Mountains are more like big hills....I go over them several
times a month on my way home to Lambertville via Hopewell. Heading west
on
Route 518, you take a hard right at the center light in Hopewell and
travel
northwest over the Sourlands toward Ringoes which lies in the valley on
the
other side. It's a very pretty ride, in every season.
Have you tried to find the Roff's phone number using Yahoo's "People
Finder"?
