Hi Roz,

As I am a Durling descendent I have almost the whole
Dorlandt/Dorland/Darland/Durland/Durling line in my files. The name was
originally Dorlandt. Two cousins came here in the 1600's--Jan Gerretse
Dorlandt in 1652, and Lambert Janse Dorlandt in April 1663 on the ship
"De Bonte Koe" (the Spotted Cow). Both came from Holland and are
descendents of Gerard Splinter Van Ruwiel b. 1298 in Kortenhoef,
Holland. We descend from Lambert. My great grandfather William H.
Durling is the 1st cousin 3xremoved of John/Johannes Dorlandt who
married Catherine Van Arsdale/Liew. In addition he is also the 2nd
cousin 3xremoved of John's spouse Catherine Van Arsdale/Liew as she is
also a Van Cleef descendent as is William H. Durling.

My info on the John/Johannes-Catherine Van Arsdale line is a little
different than yours though. Catherine VAN ARSDALE has proved out to be
Catherine VAN LIEW. It is thought that Johannes died in the Indian Raids
during the summer of 1780 in Jefferson Co., KY as all references to him
end about that time. Catherine married William Lucas March 27, 1786.
Abraham Dorland-the son of Johannes and Catherine I have with a spouse
named Sally Brown. They were married November 28, 1804 in Nicholas Co.,
KY. Is Sally Brown the sister to Phillip Bellis's wife. You did not
mention her name. Is she a Brown as well?

I do not know the name of the spouse of Jeremiah Crow. All I know is the
name and death date of 1838 that Kathi Roff had. Apparently she was
looking for info on him as well. I have not been able to connect him
with my John Cray b. abt. 1770 yet, although I think that Kathi thought
that he was John's father. I believe that John had a brother
Christopher, but I have no proof of that or parents for either man.

"Shannock" is an alteration of the name "Neshanic" which is an area of
Hillsborough Twp., Somerset County. There currently is Neshanic which is
the general area and Neshanic Station which is the actual village in
Hillsborough, Somerset County.

Hi Jackie,

Thanks for this info on CROW/CRAY. I don't know if we connect or
not...I
simply have been trying to find out more information on a "Jeremiah
CROW"
for the past several years and I stumbled upon Kathi ROFF's old post.

There was a Johan Wilhelm BOLLESFELDT (William BELLIS) (bp. 1713 in
Nordhofen GERMANY; d. after 1771 in Somerset Co NJ) who lived near Ten
Mile
Run. He married Anna Catharina KEMPEL in the Reformed Dutch Church, NY,
in
1743. They apparently had four children:

Adam m. Catrina DILTS;
Wilhelm (who may have died at the Battle of Monmouth...maybe not!);
Maria m. Jeremiah CROW; and
Ure m. Mr. STEVENSON and moved to PA.

According to "Bellis Ancestors and Cousins" authored by Tom and
Genevieve
BELLIS, Adam and Catrina lived near Shannock, Hillsborough Twp.,
Somerset Co
NJ, and had five or more children of which at least three moved to Ohio
and
Kentucky after the Revolution. Some of those children ultimately
returned
home to NJ.

I am trying to ascertain whether any of Adam's siblings may have also
tried
moving to the frontier along with their nieces and nephews, and possibly
returned back to NJ as well. (I also suspect his brother William, may
not
have died at Monmouth, but instead headed West...)

I have never been able to find anything on Maria or her husband Jeremiah
"CROW"... Your William H. DURLING is intriguing, however...

My ancestor, Philip BELLIS, was born circa 1792-95 in "NJ" but I have
yet to
confirm who his father was -- there were several BELLIS/BELLES/BELLAS
families in the NJ/PA area who could be candidates. Philip first pops
up in
courthouse records in Nicholas Co KY when he marries in 1813; a few
years
later he bought a small parcel of land there on "Somerset Creek" from
his
brother-in-law Abraham DORLAND. Abraham's parents were John/Johannes
DORLAND (b. 1740) and Catherine Van AERSDALE (VanARSDALEN) of Harlingen,
Somerset Co NJ. According to online databases, John sold his NJ land to
Cornelius TIENBROCK in 1778; moved to VA; died circa 1786 in Jefferson
Co KY
and buried in Berkeley Co WV. Catherine remarried William LUCAS, who
apparently was also from Harlingen.

Over the years I've noticed the DORLAND and DURLING names being
intertwined/interchanged. Do you have any idea if your William DURLING
is
connected to John DORLAND? Do you happen to know who the wife was of
the
Jeremiah CROW who died in 1836?

Thanks again!
