Hello all,
Years ago I purchased a map from the Geneaological Society of NJ. At the
time, I bought it just because I was interested in all the names in the area
where I lived and I love maps. This morning while digging for unrelated
papers, I rediscovered this map but I don't know how to interpret the
information on it.
It says: Sheet B Hunterdon County NJ. Genealogical Society of NJ Map
Series#4 Manuscript Map by D. Stanton Hammond, J.D. 1965
It doesn't show roads, only town or village names, rivers/creeks, and
property lines with tons of names. Each property has name(s), a year and
what I imagine are block and lot numbers numbers maybe? Some have one name
within the property boundaries but many have two, not the same surname. For
instance for a piece near Pottersville:
John McKinstry
Aaron Sutton
1794
(6-542)
231.A.
Another interesting one has several dates and actually says Lot.
Lot#54
Henry Cuyler
Tunis Melick - 1775
Peter Melick
Issac Farley
Wm. Welsh - 1798
(5-245) 280.A.
Jacob Welsh - 1845
(Somerset Co. - B-2 page 296)
180.A.
There is also a large line through the western part of the map area that
says Jury Line.
Can someone please educate me on how to interpret this information? Was this
the date of the property transactions? names of all people involved or in
the case of the Pottersville one, did they both own it in 1794? Dates that
appear on map range from 1713 to 1845.
THANK YOU in advance for any assistance.
Dana Bowers
