Richard,
In the Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Alexandria, I observed an old
ambrotype (glass) image attached to a monument. The small metal
two-piece encasement is attached to the headstone with masonry screws.
The image is housed within a rubber seal. Due to age and climate, the
seal is brittle and broken and the image is destroyed by moisture.
I believe dags can date back to the 1850's. Even when well-cared for,
they develop a distinctive "halo" patina and deteriorate over time.
If your message refers to Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, I can
provide a direct contact to you who can answer your question.
