The County Clerk won't be able to help you. This estate is too old to be
found in Flemington. You need to get it from the State Archives in Trenton.
What you are describing came from an account given by the executors of the
estate, and the original papers are at the Archives.

I think you'd be better off writing to the Hunterdon County Clerk and asking
for a copy of the estate record for John Holcombe.

Subject: [NJHUNTER] Robert Esmay re John Holcombe of Amwell
Greetings from a list "Newbie",
I know nothing about New Jersey resources, and would very much appreciate
the help of those experienced in researching Hunterdon records.
John Holcombe md Elizabeth Woolrich. This was a Quaker couple. John
Holcombe died in Amwell in August of 1743, leaving a will for which I have
the following abstract:
His will was proved 31 Aug 1745 (Liber 4:371). The New Jersey Colonial
Documents, Calendary of Wills 1730 -1750, gives a summary: "1743, 17th of 6
mo. (August). Holcombe, John, of Amwell, Hunterdon Co., yeoman; will of.
Wife, Elizabeth. Son, Samuel, place said son lives on, described in
testator's deed for same. Grandson, John Holcombe, son of Samuel, the place
called Hoppers, as by deed for same to him. Son, Richard, the plantation
bought of John Way, when he is of age. Place (John Comfort's adjoining
land) to grandson John. Jacob, son of son Samuel. Daughters - Grace Calvin
(wife of Philip Calvin), Mary Holcombe, Julian Holcombe ....... To the poor
of Buckingham Meeting. ..... Proved August 31, 1745. (Executors
Quakers)."
Now then, there is evidently another document relating to the disposition of
John Holcombe's estate, in 1747.
"New Jersey Archives, First Series Vol. XXX, Abstracts of Wills, Vol. II
1730-1750, p. 240, is the source of information that on Sep. 13, 1747,
monies from the estate of John Holcombe were paid to Robert Esmey among many
other persons. "
I need to locate this September 13, 1747 document so that I can see the
exact wording of the bequest to Robert Esmay, and to see if there is any
indication of where this man lived at the time, and the reason he was owed
money from this estate.
Can anyone tell me where this source:
New Jersey Archives, First Series Vol. XXX, Abstracts of Wills, Vol. II
1730-1750, p. 240
can be accessed?
Also, what other resources might be checked for infomation on residents of
Amwell in that period, looking for any other mention of Robert
Esmey/Esmay/Ismay?
Sincere thanks,
Sharilyn Whitaker
