Hello again.
I don't mind you asking at all. Thanks for showing me your interesting
line. I would have been very pleased to find John Holcombe and Elizabeth
Woolrich among my own ancestors, but unfortunately this is not the case.
I am not related at all to John Holcombe and Elizabeth Woolrich. Neither am
I related to the "Robert Esmey" who was supposedly paid a certain amount in
1747, in the disposition of John Holcombe's estate. whoever he actually was.
I began all this as a researcher of the Snyder/Flagler family, into which
one Ann/Nancy Esmay married, and I must admit I am not related to this
Snyder/Flager family either, but I have a definite interest in them and have
studied them for quite a number of years.
Perhaps the following might be of benefit to some future person who goes to
the Hunterdon, NJ rootsweb archives seeking information on Esmay.
There were at least three contemporary people surnamed Esmay/Ismay
1. Lt. Thomas Esmay who was born in Rumbout Precinct, ca 1742-1747 and
married Elizabeth Parmentier
2. Anny/Nancy Esmay who married about 1765 or so, Jacob Snyder, son of
Johan Jost Snyder and Anna Magdalena Elizabeth Flagler. Jacob Snyder was
born and raised in the same general area where Thomas Esmay was born.
Thomas and Elizabeth Parmentier were married in Poughkeepsie DRC in 1771,
and
Nancy Esmay and Jacob Snyder baptised a daughter Sarah in that same church
in 1769
3. Sarah Ismay, whose father was evidently named Robert, as she had a son
Robert Ismay Todd, and this name is carried on. This Sarah is sometimes seen
as "Lady Sarah Ismay", daugher of "Lord Robert Ismay" and his wife Margaret
(of uncertain surname). Sarah Ismay married Capt. John Todd, and lived in
New Jersey.
There are no known parents for Lt. Thomas or for Ann/Nancy Ismay/Esmay.
Sarah's father is known to have been Robert Ismay, but nothing is known
about him with any certainty.
Many thanks to everyone who has sent helpful information on Holcombe and
good advise about accessing the will and probate records,
Sharilyn Whitaker
