I have a family member who died in California and was transported, by train,
back to Chicago, Illionois and was buried there. She was young too. I
think the train made a difference in those days. Before that, you are
probably right in thinking it wasn't done too much. It cost money as well
as time and they really didn't "embalm" people like they do today either.
During the Civil War, they did transport hurt soldiers various places to
hospitals by train -- Cheraw, SC to New York City (the Bronx) is one that I
know about in my own family in March,1865.
