Hi Marfy,

Thanks for the input...lots of useful details. Makes me all the more
curious why these deeds were recorded in OHIO.

Re. BRAY to EMANS deed: "Boundary lines...contains 8.5 acres whereof Emans
is in actual possession."

Re. WOOLVERTON to RITTENHOUSE deed: "...14 acres more or less"

It seems to me Isaac RITTENHOUSE purchased EMANS's piece of land from
WOOLVERTON, plus maybe additional adjacent land already owned by WOOLVERTON.

Wayne Co OHIO?

Dear Roz,
These are interesting deeds. I share what I know:

Daniel Bray bought 100 acres from his father-in-law Dennis Woolverton in
1774 in Kingwood on what is today Co. Rte 519. He built a log house there
which burned down and was replaced by a more substantial house. I found this
info in the Saxton Papers at the County Historical Society. You do not
mention how much land Bray sold to Job Emans; I presume it was not the
entire 100 acres since Bray stayed there until he died in 1819. In his will
of 1813 he mentions "the residue of the farm given or devised to me by
Dennis Woolverton (my wife's father)." He divided his property equally among
his ten sons & daughters.
Some of the names in the deed should be corrected. Jonathan Doan is Dean.
Francis Tomlin is Tomlinson, Peter Embrey in Emley.
The Job Emans who bought the property was almost certainly Job Emmons who
was takec in Kingwood in 1780. He was a trustee of the Kingwood Baptist
Church until 1792 when Daniel Bray was elected to replace Job Emmons "who
has moved" according to church minutes. But He returned to the the church
the following year. When he wrote his will in 1812, he was living in
Freehold NJ and left all his real estate to his sons Amos and Job. He made
no mention of land in Ohio.

The note in the church minutes that Job Emans/Emmons had moved by July 1792
accords with his selling his Kingwood land in 1791.

Technicalities: You probably know it is the Court of Common Pleas, not
Please, although people appearing before Judge Reading probably said
'please' a lot. And the land was surveyed for William Biddle, not by him.

The John Woolverton who bought the land already owned lots of land, so I am
not surprised he sold it only 8 years later. The Isaac Rittenhouse who
bought the land from Woolverton in 1799 was probably the Isaac who owned the
Crosskeys Tavern in Rosemont. He wrote his will in 1805 and mentioned owning
"a meadow lot in Kingwood." You did not say anything about how many acres or
any other description of the property being sold, so I don't know if this is
the lot in question. The other Isaac Rittenhouses I have in my database
don't seem right for this. By the way, Isaac Rittenhouse's son in law was
John Bray, son of Daniel.

As to the second deed you cite, Isaac Rittenhouse had a son William, but his
wife was Catharine Ely, and he died in Hunterdon Co. in 1834. He also had a
brother William (as well as a father William). The father died in Kingwood
in 1799. The brother, however, moved to Fayette County, PA, according to
Lequear's Traditions of Hunterdon.

Hope this helps,
Marfy
