Thanks for the reference to the marriage of John STRIMPLE and Elizabeth
PETTIT.

I'm glad the guardianship record is useful. It gave me the first clue I
needed to find Aaron Strimple's parents.

You're right about Hahlon being Mahlon, and I have a bit more information
about him. I didn't have his wife's maiden name. Thanks.

Recollections of Baptistown

~~ 95a ~~

In the fall of 1850, the typhoid fever broke out in Locktown, N.J.  I
think the store keeper, Peter Gary, was the first one to take the disease.
He recovered.  His wife took the disease and died.  REv. J. Kirkpatrick of
Ringoes preached her funeral.  Elijah Melten kept the tavern.  He and his wife
both took the disease but recovered.  George D. Rittenhouse and wife were the
next to take the disease.  Mrs. Rittenhouse died.  They lived in the house on the
corner of the road now occupied by Miss Kate Sutton.

~~ 96 ~~

Francis Rittenhouse, Joseph S. West, Mahlon Strimple, Amos Bonham,
Abigail, wife of James Rittenhouse were all very sick.  The disease attacked
some of the most robust people, apparently, that lived in the place.  Dr. Lessey
of Head Quarters attended most of the sick, if not all of them.

So, thanks again for your notes. It's amazing how little pieces each of us
has fit together.

Dear Frances,
The marriage of John Strimple and Elizabeth Pettit is listed in the
Genealogical Magazine of NJ, Vol 72 No 3 pg 136, performed by Richard Opdycke JP. My
notes say: See also Vol 4 pg 27 and Bible Record.
The guardianship information is great. It means I get to merge people who
have been listed as children of an unknown Strimple and an Elizabeth.
I believe the Hahlon is really Mahlon, a fairly common given name at the time
in Hunterdon. In fact, I have a Mahlon Strimple married to Deborah Lake in
1828, but didn't know his parents. Their children were named Maria, Calvin G.,
Jonas, Sarah Elizabeth, Amy Jane and Martha Ann.
As for Moses Pettit, yes he must have been some kind of relative to
Elizabeth. Unfortunately, the only information I have on him is that he died in 1844
and his estate was administered by Elijah Heath, which I found in an ad in the
Hunterdon Gazette, while looking for something else. I just checked the index
and find there was nothing in the paper for Moses Pettit prior to 1844. But
that is a link worth working on.
As to the parents of Elizabeth Pettit, there was an Elizabeth born to Jesse
Pettit who wrote his will in 1812 and died about 1815. His other children were
Anna, Sarah, Mary and Mahlon. But I don't know if that is the Elizabeth who
married John Strimple.
And for the parents of John Strimple, I have no information other than that
his mother's name was Margaret Smith. And I can't say how I got that.
Oh well, some progress has been made.
Thanks very much,
Marfy

Interesting! I believe that "my" Aaron Strimple's parents were John and

NJHunter-L member Marietta Pickell send me the folowing in 2001.

"More Records of Old Hunterdon County" Vol. 1 pg. 80
under Guardianships of Minors and Lunatics 1794-1827

"Strimple, Andrew, Mary and Martha (-21) Sindora and Sarah (-14), c/o
(children of) John, dec'd. Guardian : Elizabeth Strimple who was named guardian.
Surety for the younger children was Darius Everitt - Aug. 9, 1816. Sureties
for the older children were Moses Pettit and William Hart - May 10, 1816.
(File 1289)"

"Strimple, Aaron, Hahlon, Christoper and Elizabeth (-14), c/o (children of)
John Strimple, dec'd. Guardian: Elizabeth Strimple; sureties, Moses Pettit
and William Hart May 10, 1816. (File 1236)"

Since you suggest Elizabeth's birth name was PETTIT, then Moses Pettit might
have been a relative of hers.

The 1850 census shows this family:
Kingwood Township, Hunterdon County, New Jersey
273, 278
Elizabeth Strimple, 77, f, 1,500, New Jersey
Sarah, 35, f
Sindona, 33, f, New Jersey
William Conway 24, m, farmer, New Jersey

What is your source for the marriage of John Strimple and Elizabeth Pettit?
(It seems very reasonable to me!)

Dear Frances,
I have a John Strimple (born abt 1770, died 1814 Kingwood NJ) married to an
Elizabeth Pettit (c.1775-1856). They married 22 November 1795. John died
intestate, so his estate doesn't name his children. I wonder if he and wife
Elizabeth were the parents of your Aaron and Christopher Strimple.
