Thanks to everyone who responded with information on Durling/Dorland and
Hoagland surnames. I found out that "Gray" was actually "Cray" in
Hillsborough and Montgomery twps, Somerset Co. Elizabeth or "Letta" Hoagland
married Daniel Cray and Jane Emma Cray their daughter was born in 1847 not
1842. The Sourland Mountain area was full of Cray, Bush, Hoagland, Durling,
Wyckoff, and Skillman families and they all intermarried. The mid-1800s and
early 1900s must have been rough for these families who were poor,
uneducated, mostly illiterate, and it was hard to eke out a living to
support the numerous children who came along. This Bush family appears to
have no connection with ours from Martinsville and Warren Twp but I was
contacted by someone in Tennessee who is from this family and thought I
would do a little research. Thus the query to rootsweb. Thanks all!
Pam
