I have been watching the Johnston discussion with interest, looking for
an uplink for our end of line Johnston. He is Samuel Johnston (b. 1799
d. Feb/Mar 1864). He married Phebe/ Febe King, March. 8, 1829. Next
are various Johnstone notes I have saved in hopes of finding the parents
of Samuel.
Samuel's will is NJW 06376J is on LDS Film #0464536. Dated 16 Feb 1864.
Proved 14 Mar 1864. Names children Susan Stephenson, Samuel J.
Johnston, Charity Johnston, Phebe Ann Johnston, and children of deceased
son Allen.
"Johnston, Samuel and Febe King, Mch. 8, 1829, 2-355 (Probasco, JP)."
Marriage Records of Hunterdon Co. Deats. p. 354. 1986.
Tombstone in Quaker Cemetery in Quakertown, NJ reads Samuel Johnston,
1799 1864
Records of Zion church on LDS Film #0888766 show a burial on 1 Nov 1829
of an infant son of Samuel Johnston of Spruce Run. Also a burial on 7
Feb 1830 of Joseph Johnstone Esq of Spruce Run.
"2 May 1785, Samuel Johnson adv. that he now occupies the shop where
Henry Clifton has for several years followed the occupation of hatter at
Fair View in Kingwood; and adv. hats for sale." New Jersey Gazette
The early Johnston's are noted as Col. Philip Johnston...he was the son
of Philip Johnston who lived in a large stone mansion at Sidney, in
which home the younger Philip was born in 1741. The Colonel was killed
Aug 27, 1776, "just thirty-five years to a day from the date of his
birth. However, the book goes on to describe why the parentage of the
Colonel is not clear. The book also includes the will of one Samuel
Johnston dated Jan 03, 1775. His children listed are: Robert, Susannah
[Grandin], David, Samuel, James, Elizabeth, Catherine [Maybury].
("Facts and Fantasies of Franklin" written by J. E. Stout [1995]? This
book makes frequent reference to the Johnston and Nixon families.)
