Bud,
Your deductions make sense to me also. I don't have anything for Jacob
Jr. probably because my interest has always been Mary Johnson, the dau of
Jacob Sr. She married Samuel Lare and that is how my husband descends from
Jacob and Sarah Johnson.
To add to the mystery: I copied these inscriptions at Rutgers from the
collection of the Gen Soc of NJ at Alexander Library. Bethlehem Presbyterian
Church Yard, Grandin, Union Township, copied August 12, 1928 by 7 members of
GSNJ. Don't know which Mahlon he was but he was only age 39 when he died.
The asterisk means that Ann Johnson was not inscribed on the stone as being
buried there just that the children were sons or daughters of Mahlon and Ann
Johnson:
"Johnson, Mahlon, d. Aug. 24, 1848, in 40th year; wife Ann*; daughter Sarah,
d. Aug. 29, 1848, aged 9.5.24; daughter Martha D., d. Dec. 24, 1858, aged
11.4.9; son Michael S., d. May 29, 1846, aged 13.1.26; son David, d. Feb.
11, 1844, aged 0.5.20."
Then,
"Johnson, Capt. Jacob, d. April 10, 1847, aged 91.0.18; wife Sarah "widow"
d. April 3, 1853, aged 101.0.16."
"Johnson, James, d. Jan. 25, 1847, age not given; wife Susan, d. June 15,
1842, aged 68.0.6." We know from other sources that James Johnson was born
13 September 1778 in East Amwell.
"Johnson, Jacob M., b. Jan. 13, 1801, d. Oct. 6, 1885; wife Christianna
Emery, b. Jan. 20, 1804, d. Dec. 17, 1885." They had at least 10 children.
He might have been a son of James Johnson and Susannah Tunnison since he is
buried near them and also near Jacob Johnson Sr.
If there was an inscription for Jacob Jr. I did not copy it. Apparently
Jacob Sr bought 32 acres in what is now Union Twp in 1825 and sold it to his
son Jacob in 1832 with the understanding that Jacob and Sarah would continue
to live there until their deaths.
Sorry I can't be more help. And I do see that in the History of East Amwell,
1700-1800, Jacob's name is spelled Johnston as well as Johnson.
Pam
