Hello, I have just joined this list after finding that my paternal
grandafather, William George BROOM (born c.1880) hailed from the Dereham
area. I understand there are a number of BROOMS in that vicinity.

As a relative newcomer to family history research following the birth of my
first child in January, does any have any helpful advice for gathering
further information about this family?

I have heard that W.G. BROOM'S mother's maiden name was GIRLING, another
seemingly common name in the East Anglia area.
