This ending was used until 09.feb 1923 (performed from 01.july 1923) when
"law about personnames" was decided, to tell the name of the father.
"Johannessen - Johannesson" was used before this to tell that
Ole Johannessen-son was the son of Johannes in adition to this the farmnavn
where the person actualy lived. Since they often moved from place to place
we can find the same person with different names before this law was
decided. Erik Olsen Vågen, Erik Olsen Leren, Erik Olsen Golmen could be the
same person moving around and we have to know date of birth or marriage to
decide. The only thing we know is that his fathers name was Ole other Ola.
The -sen or -son was used in both variations around the country. From 1923
the name is used like a familyname no mather the name of the father in the
family to day.
Now I'm sure this is clear as glas?
Best regards
Odd
