Subject: My first month of research.

The project started in January 1998.
Previously I had visited the graves of my grandfather in Australia and my Great Grandfather in Singapore. What sort of lives did they lead? What did they leave behind?

I am almost 40 years old, and I don't know what it was but I felt it was time to attempt to trace the family roots. Something to hand down to my children, so they wouldn't forget their heritage.

This appeared to be a daunting task. I had no idea to start, but felt that the internet would be a useful tool, so I'd thought I'd try it out.

I also requested "Tracing Your Ancestors in Norway" from the Norwegian Embassy. Having read that, it is off to the 'net.

1.EMAIL search using bigfoot.com and other search engines.Found over 200 flaks, emailed the lot. Found one possible relation in Norway but it's too early to tell. Search for names and addresses, but not ready to write people yet..

2.Do a generic search for Flak, nothing new turned up. Alot of stuff to do with what they shoot at aeroplanes.

3.Surf the net looking for Archives, links, etc. Found some but not sure how to utilize them yet.

4.Talk to living relatives and get a verbal history. Father very helpful, able to produce parts of a family tree plus ggrandfather's obituary.

5.Subscribe to internet newsgroups and forums and ask lots of questions. Find very helpful people!! Use the information to create a picture. Create a home page for the internet in the hope of attracting people with information.

6.Gather resources, e.g. CENSUS, archives, references, ready to do some long hours of searching. - links to Archives, FHC, libraries. Search for online information.
Set out a "plan of attack".

7.Next step...the LDS FHC.

I'm posting this so any "newbies" who come along might view it. I'm a newbie myself, but I'm keeping tabs on what I do so I do not duplicate my efforts unnecessarily.

I personally am finding this to be an absorbing, exciting project.
